Each year, the Virginia School Counselor Association hosts a number of professional development opportunities and events.  This past year, the VSCA has hosted the annual conference, King's Dominion Counselor Day, the spring symposium, various Meet & Greets, Twitter chats, the summer summit, monthly podcasts, and many more.  The Professional Development Committee is committed to bringing you timely, relevant, and cost-effective opportunities.  Be sure to check out the events below and follow our Podcast, SCOPE, to keep up with all of the latest happenings around the state.  If you have any suggestions, feedback, or requests for particular professional development in your area, please contact the Professional Development Committee Chair at vscaprofdevelopment@gmail.com

    Our in-person Fall Symposium is bringing Dr. Michael Southam-Gerow and Dr. Shawn C.T. Jones to share their expertise with Virginia school counselors.  We are so excited to meet together after a year long hiatus to collaborate on and share common experiences pre and post pandemic. 

    Your registration, VSCA members $80, Non-members $100, Students $60,  will include a light breakfast, a delicious lunch, and a scrumptious cookie tray.

    Dr. Southam-Gerow is Chair of the VCU Department of Psychology and Founder of the VCU Anxiety Clinic. His research focuses on dissemination and implementation of treatments for kids and families, measurement of treatment integrity, and emotion regulation in children and adolescents.

    Dr. Shawn C.T. Jones is an Assistant Professor at VCU whose research principally seeks to challenge, clarify and correct the narrative concerning risk and resilience for Black youth and their families. He strives to better understand the interplay between race-related risk that influence Black youth psychological wellbeing

    Workshop Description:

    Supporting mental wellness in our schools: Ideas for assessment and intervention

    This workshop will help participants:

    • 1.    Identify and describe key principles underlying effective work with mental health with students
    • 2.    Use evidence-informed assessment and engagement techniques when working with mental health concerns
    • 3.    Apply culturally sensitive cognitive, emotional, and constructive change strategies
    • 4.    Apply  intervention strategies that can be used in a school setting
